“The social painter believes himself to be the interpreter of the people, the messenger of their feelings. He is the one who desires peace, justice, freedom. He believes that men can partake of the pleasures of the universe. Listening to birdsongs. See the waters of the rivers that flow fertilizing the land. See the starry sky and breathe the cloudless morning air. With no other thought than brotherhood and peace. Men living in a climate of justice. Where there are no hungry boys. Where there are no men without rights. Where there are no crying mothers and old people dying without shelter”. (Candido Portinari – interview with poet and friend Vinícius de Moraes, 1953).
